How can you make the unconscious conscious?

Have you ever wondered how you could predict the winner of an election? Most often, looking at the tallest of the candidates can be a good indicator. Why? Because our minds unconsciously inform us that a taller candidate is a more capable politician, and when a large group of people have this perception, the candidate gets elected. This is the power of unconscious bias – you wouldn’t consciously elect a politician based on height, would you?

Now a quick question: did you picture a man or a woman as this politician?

Most people would have imagined a man, and there is a reason for this. Our minds make snap judgements daily, which are subject to the influence of our unconscious biases.

Unconscious biases surrounding gender create certain expectations concerning the roles we are expected to take on in life. This can create repercussions in individuals’ daily lives and careers.

Unfortunately, as the name implies, we may not always be aware of implicit bias’ influence…

Over the course of this two-hour session, you will be introduced to practices that can help you get more acquainted with the hidden parts of your mind and start making the unconscious conscious.

About the Experts

Expert facilitator Alizee Thibaud is a Learning and Development Advisor at Doors Open. Previous to her work in this field, she conducted research into gender-based unconscious bias, on which she has released commissioned written work as well as workshops.

Suzanne-Mau Asam is a Learning & Development expert, and the founder and owner of Doors Open and the Female Hub. Previous to this, she has over ten years of experience in the HR and Learning & Development world, having worked for large companies such as Shell, Nationale Nederlanden and Staatsloterij.
